The folks at typepad, great folks they are, have asked me to do a little post about technology and it's role in my life. So here goes:
I'm generation y (I think). Technology has been part of my life since birth. But never in my childhood years of playing with paint on the school macs (yes, we had macs in school) did I ever imagine how central technology would be in my life.
I use my camera(s) almost daily. Having a digital SLR has been life changing. Learning a complicated camera, all by teaching myself, and getting the satisfaction that only comes with seeing that perfect print, inspires me to create more and capture endlessly. It is a passion that I constantly think about.
Then there's my phone that I use. Checking my e-mail in class, sending text messages, and knowing the weather at any second of the day... how did I ever live without it?
Keeping up with people, blog comments, and photography clients is easier than ever. I don't have time to waste- and walking across campus on a gorgeous fall day I can enjoy the foliage, while also knowing how to get to a new, hip restaurant thanks to my phone's GPS system.
When new technology emerges I am immediately drawn in. Blame this on my father, the gadget king. He loves them, and I do, too. I would love to find a fabulous printer that can print giant, borderless prints and still punch out my rhetoric papers. Technology that appeals to the creative in me is what I usually go for.
What are you most looking forward to as technology develops and evolves?
Ooo. I cannot wait until they come out with (or maybe the world already has created it, but I'm unaware): a photo quality printer-scanner-fax with the creative in mind. This means- larger tray for paper- maybe two trays (one for regular paper, the other for photo paper). Better access to ink, less cartridges, and less mess. Wireless connection to laptop (no one likes cords, and they just irritate me).
Also, technology that "fits" better into life. Size. I don't know about you, but I don't live in a brand new home with tons of space. I need stuff that will "fit" where I live- this means- in a small desk, a closet, or on an antique table.
Style. Technology is slowly getting it, but we can make anything look pretty. I'd love to see a gorgeous printer/phone that I would be proud to display on my desk and not feel like hiding.
Are there any gadgets/electronics that would help you pursue your passions more fully?
Because I am a student, and funds are not unlimited (oh I wish!) it would be wonderful to have a very nice, quality printer that would produce fabulous prints. I do like the "college girl" printer I own, and stick to the belief that it's mostly about that paper, but... being able to print something giant, or having the option to print hundreds of prints at home without running out of ink quickly would be fantastic.
A remote for the camera would be a dream. There'd be way more self portraits then... oh Lord, and I am vain enough!
Most lenses for my camera... They are pricey too, and it would be fun to have more to dink around with.
The tripod I own is just sad. The thing is weak, and old, and well- it lived in a garage for who knows how long until I rescued it. Girlfriend has seen better days. Having a brand new, durable one would be a dream.
Reflectors are another tool that photographers can never underestimate. You know readers, I had to buy a small one because they are pricey, but having a large one would be fantastic.
And lights. For shooting indoors a good set of lights/flash would be heaven.
I could go on and on...
